Since May 2009, an energetic group of nonprofiteers, technology developers, and journalists have been coming together to create the first interactive map that will visualize the Bay Area nonprofit landscape. The philanthropic sector in the Bay Area represents 14% of the region’s GDP– but today its future is uncertain.
In the context of a fast breaking economic downturn, one key problem funders face is a lack of comprehensive, up-to-date, and easily accessible nonprofit data from a reliable source. Nonprofitmapping.org will transform previously inaccessible data sets into useful knowledge that can be made broadly available using the Web, geospatial mapping tools, and social media.
By understanding how and why we’re losing nonprofits on a zip code-by-zip code basis, we aim to provide donors, funders, and philanthropies with current data that can guide their resources in ways that will have the greatest impact.
The combined talents of this group represent a genuine interest in finding a solution to the economic roadblocks facing the sector. We are looking for supporters of this project to come together and help fund the data collection and development of our mapping tool.
Nonprofitmapping.org will be a trusted online community where organizations and their constituents will both contribute their own knowledge and benefit by learning about the status of nonprofits, ultimately resulting in a vibrant and more current data set that serves the sector.
Sincerely,
NonProfitMapping.org team
